Playing games  is basically fun, getting rid of boredom, so you can fill your spare time. Playing games can activate many parts of the brain, including the “pleasure circuit.” However, if this fun activity has taken up a lot of time, even making your little one addicted, it can be troublesome.

The reason is, WHO has determined that game addiction or game disorder is a mental disorder. Experts at WHO added gaming addiction to the 11th International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD).

The draft ICD document describes it as a persistent or repetitive pattern of gaming behavior that is so severe that it “puts (gaming) ahead of other life interests”. In fact, several countries have identified gaming addiction as a major public health problem.

According to Dr. Richard Graham, a technology addiction specialist at Nightingale Hospital in London, said that the inclusion of game addiction in the ICD was welcomed by health experts. 

“This (gaming addiction) is important because it creates opportunities for more specialized services. This is something that should be taken seriously.”

The ICD is a system that contains a list of diseases and their symptoms, signs and causes issued by the WHO. Well,  this game addiction has now been included by experts in the list of  disorders due to addictive behavior . In other words, disease caused by habit or addiction. Then, what kind of addiction should you watch out for?

Addiction to this game can be said to be a disease if it fulfills three things:

  • When gamers (game players) can not control the habit of playing games.
  • Start prioritizing games over other activities.
  • Continue to play the game despite the obvious negative consequences.

Well, the three signs above must occur or be seen for a year before a diagnosis is made. Fortunately, not all types of games are addictive and can cause distraction. According to WHO,  gaming is  only called a mental disorder if the activity can interfere with or damage personal, family, work, social and educational lives. So, how do you prevent your little one from getting addicted to playing games? Well, at least there are some ways you can try.

1. Don’t put the computer in the room

This one tip is arguably the most “effective”. In short, don’t put a computer or television in your little one’s room. The goal is to make it easier for mothers or caregivers to monitor video game play time. Make no mistake, children can steal time playing games in their rooms without their parents knowing.

If your little one plays games from a smartphone, tablet, or portable game console, ask him to keep the tools away while sleeping, eating, or doing schoolwork. However, if the child is still “stubborn”, the mother can keep the tools. Then, the mother can give it as a reward after the little one finishes doing school work.

2. Use Parental Control Features

Try to take advantage of the parental control feature  , because the way to limit children playing games is also quite powerful through these tips. Now almost every game has a feature that allows mothers to manage everything related to the game. Now, through this feature, the mother can set the time for the little one to play the game.

3. Stipulate the Rules Before Playing

Before your little one plays video games, ask him to pay attention to the time. Then, parents can make rules regarding the duration of the game. For example, asserting himself that an hour from now he must stop playing it. That way, the Little One can’t make excuses.
